3-Days of Family Friendly Piracy at Fishermen’s Village
Droves of pirates and thousands of spectators are making plans to be part of this year’s festivities held July 25th through 27th, 2014 in the waterside town of Punta Gorda. Each year the Mayor of Punta Gorda officially proclaims this fun city as “A Quaint little fishing village with a pirate problem”.
During this last weekend in July, pirates and pirates at heart visit Fishermen’s Village to plunder and pillage the local shops, restaurants and the vast array of vendors at this family & pet friendly Pirate Festival.
The 6th Annual Fishermen’s Village Pirate Fest hosts a variety of free Pirate Themed activities and events throughout the 3-day weekend. There will be an abundance of pirate characters and beautiful mermaids, a living history pirate encampment, live entertainment and lots of exciting interactive games for both the young and old to enjoy.
One of the many highlights of this festival is the pirate flotilla and invasion where boaters from around the area go all out decorating their vessels to compete for cash prizes, trophies and bragging rights. The excitement builds as the participating flotilla boaters threaten the dockside patrons with an assortment of water weapons. The melee begins with the attacking boaters being met with opposition from a barrage of super soakers fired by patrons from the docks. Meanwhile, pirates with an arsenal of real cannons and black powder weapons ultimately repel the attacking flotilla in a smoke-filled exhilarating battle in the fun infested waters of Charlotte Harbor. Those interested in entering their boat, being part of the battle or just wanting to watch the battle dockside should visit http://www.fishermensvillagepiratefest.com for details or they can call Harbormaster, Jim Branch at 941-575-3000 for more information on the flotilla.
This year the annual Pirate’s Ball has moved to a much larger facility and promises to be bigger and better than ever before. The new location is at the Charlotte Harbor Event & Conference Center located at 75 Taylor Street, Punta Gorda, just one mile East of Fishermen’s Village. The Ball will take place Friday evening July 25th from 8-11 pm and will offer a nice mix of piratical entertainment featuring performances by Celtic Mayhem and the Bawdy Boys and will include some tasty selections of finger foods and hot hors d’oeuvres, a well-stocked Cash Bar, and the very popular pirate costume contest. Ticket purchases for this adults’ only Pirate’s Ball includes entry into the costume contest and a donation to the Yah Yah Girls Back Pack Kidz Backpack Program. The adults costume contest will be judged at 10 pm with the victors receiving coveted prizes. Ball Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door and can be purchased via the event’s website.
There are troves of treasures to be discovered while strolling the more than a quarter mile of shaded corridors and breezeways at this unique covered nautical themed waterfront mall and resort. You will find an assortment of art, craft, food, and pirate themed vendors that complement the local shops & restaurants both inside and out.
Pirate crews and performers from across the state will gather to demonstrate the use of black powder in mock battles with real cannons, flintlocks and muskets throughout the weekend. Come out to Fishermen’s Village and celebrate the Maritime History of Punta Gorda in True Pirate Fashion by dressing up as a Swashbuckler, Buccaneer or Tavern Wench and enter one of our costume contests for Kids, Adults, and even Pets. Pirate Fest goers will enjoy ongoing performances throughout the weekend by Celtic Mayhem, the Bawdy Boys, A-Tribe, Pirates of the Treasure Coast, the Royal Chessmen, Blackbeard’s Pirate Ship, live mermaids and many more.
Weekend activities include a walking Pirate Parade, a Ship-to-Shore Battle, a Living History Pirate Encampment, Cannon and Black Powder Weapon Demonstrations, interactive games and the all new Twilight Fire Show Spectacular Saturday evening. Admission to this 3-day event is free although a $2 “Buck-an-Ear” contribution is greatly appreciated.
A portion of the proceeds from the Fishermen’s Village Pirate Fest will benefit The Yah Yah Girl’s, “Back Pack Kidz” program. This program provides backpacks of food for students in financial need to take home on weekends. The Yah Yah Girls are in need of specific donated food items, before, during and after the Pirate Festival. A complete list of these items can be found on their website http://www.theyahyahgirls.com/index.html
