It is that time of year, fall is in the air. Scents of pumpkin, cinnamon, hay, and apples fill the air. It is Fishermen’s Village’s second annual Oktoberfest, Saturday, October 9th, 2010. Oktoberfest will be held throughout all three sections of The Village, located 1200 W. Retta Esplanade Punta Gorda, FL 33950. Fall Festivities begin at 10:00am.
Scarecrows will line The Village as you walk past the local shops and restaurants. The first event of the day begins at 10:00am, East Elementary School’s PTO Pumpkin Patch. Pumpkins are delivered to Fishermen’s Village where the children can come and pick out their own pumpkin out of the patch. This Pumpkin patch is a day long event. Shortly following the opening of the pumpkin patch, SW Florida German Shepherd Schutzhund Club obedience training demonstration starts at 10:30 am. Just in case someone misses the first demonstration there is another at 1:00 pm. While embarking in the fall festivities, performances by Peace River, East Elementary and Sallie Jones School Chorus will be held from 11:30 am-12:30 pm. Live Music continues throughout the day featuring the Steinswingers from 1:00-3:00 pm. Later that evening, Peter and Edith perform favorite German tunes from 4:00-8:00pm, Center Stage.
A new event takes place this Oktoberfest, “Scarecrow on Parade.” Scarecrows used to have the daunting task of scaring the birds away from the crops, i.e. corn. Store owners of the shops at Fishermen’s Village will debut their scarecrow styling skills. Scarecrows of all themes, shapes, and sizes will be on display throughout The Village for everyone to vote on their favorite scarecrow. The public is encouraged to vote. By voting they are entered in a chance to win a 100 dollar gift certificate. A voting ballot will be available inside every store along with a ballot box in front of each of the three sections of Fishermen’s Village. The “Parade of Scarecrows” will be on display throughout the village through October 18th.
The first annual Weiner Dog Derby will debut at Oktoberfest. From 3:00-4:00pm the dachshunds will compete in the 25 yard race near Center Court. Long haired, short-haired, mini or standard, all dachshunds are welcome. Owners may help their dog cross the finish line by encouraging them with a treat or squeaky toy. Any furry team member may purchase a costume at Salty Paws for a discounted price, costumes are not required.”Weinners” receive prizes from Salty Paws!
